Rick Arthur
Rick Arthur is a Trainer/Creative Associate with Storyteller Communications LLC. Rick has taught copy editing and headline and caption writing at the American Press Institute, and is a graduate of API's prestigious Train The Trainer program. A three-decade veteran of print, television and Internet journalism in Southern California and the Pacific Northwest, he's been a senior editor at newspapers ranging from 10,000 to 400,000 circulation, and at KTTV-Fox News in Los Angeles and KOMO 4 News in Seattle. Notably, when he was editor of the Glendale (Calif.) News-Press, it won more California Newspaper Publisher Association awards, including General Excellence, than any paper in history. He also polished his craft under the legendary editor Jim Bellows at the late Los Angeles Herald Examiner, where he was news editor for five years and sports editor (its last) for another five years. Rick is currently a copy editor at The News Tribune in Tacoma, Wash.. where he led a group that won first place in the team category in the American Copy Editors Society 2005 headline writing contest. (Winners the previous two years were The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times.) Rick has won many other awards and supervised many staff awards from the CNPA, the Greater Los Angeles Press Club, the Society of Professional Journalists, the American Copy Editors Society, the Associated Press Managing Editors and the Associated Press Sports Editors. He's been a presenter at many student and professional journalism conferences, and is a master coach and facilitator.
